Final Major Assignment #2

Throughout this essay I will discuss the correlation between video game usage and the symptoms of insomnia in adult gamers. Insomnia is a sleep disorder that affects as many as 35% of adults. It can have serious effects, leading to excessive daytime sleepiness, a higher risk of auto accidents, and widespread health effects from sleep deprivation. (Suni, 2020) This is a serious disorder that if not treated properly can have devastating health and safety consequences, “For example, more than 50% of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease complain of difficulties initiating or maintaining sleep, and 50% of adults with diabetes are reported to have insomnia. Shorter sleep time is associated with impaired glucose regulation and with increased risk of diabetes.” (Mark R. Rosekind, 2010)

——————————————————————

There are many factors that can contribute to insomnia. The increase in technology and increased use of video games is one of these contributing factors, “An increased amount of screen time throughout the day has been linked to insomnia and symptoms of depression in adolescents.” (TheSleepFoundation) The light that is emitted from electronic gaming devices can have a drastic effect on sleep and it is named The Blue Light Effect, “Electronic devices emit an artificial blue light that can suppress the release of the body’s sleep-inducing hormone, melatonin. In turn, this can interfere with the body’s natural internal clock that signals when it’s time to sleep and wake up.” (TheSleepFoundation) Another factor is that people delay sleep to play video games, “Results show that on average, gamers delayed going to bed 36 percent of the nights they played video games. Average game playing was 4.6 nights per week. The average delay in bedtime on the nights spent gaming was 101 minutes…our data shows that video gaming is quite an important factor that frequently leads to missed sleep for 67 percent of gamers.” (Daily, 2016)

——————————————————————

Today’s society relies heavily on electronic forms of entertainment, especially during the COVID lockdowns. “According to Verizon, U.S. video game usage during peak hours has gone up 75 percent since the quarantine first went into effect last week. Meanwhile, video streaming has also increased by 12 percent.” (Shanley, 2020) I found this topic to be both interesting and informative, due to the increase in gaming especially during the quarantine. I came across a study done within a few countries on the continent of Africa, “Data was collected in South Arica, Cameroon, Morocco, Rwanda, Tunisia, Gabon, Nigeria, Ivory Coast and Senegal…The effect of continuous gaming time (after 1, 6 and 12 months) on severity of sleep disorders and the distribution of gamers per country and per type of device were also calculated.” I found that the duration of time had led to an increase of symptoms of insomnia, “After 1 month, participants has no clinical insomnia, but after 6 months they developed subthreshold insomnia and clinical moderate insomnia.” The participants began to show symptoms of insomnia after six months which is why I believe the duration brings on the symptoms of insomnia. The study also included that the participants who experienced the first symptoms where people who are considered problematic gamers and spend a longer amount of time playing. “In the same population, a small proportion of respondents reported experiencing insomnia and sleepiness simultaneously (n=850, 8.04% of the sample). Based on a retrospective account of participants, problematic gamers experienced the first symptoms of sleep disorders after ten months of intensive gaming, with an average of 16 hours of gaming per week.” (Faustin Armel Etindele Sosso, 2018)

——————————————————————

Along with the research I found, I conducted my own research by surveying a random sample of adult gamers ages ranging from 18-21 years old. Out of the seven responses, I found that the gamers that said they play games farther from bedtime fall asleep in less than 10 minutes but as the time rang closer to the time, they laid down for bed it was said they had a longer time falling asleep ranging from 30 minutes to an hour after laying down. I also asked them about their quality of sleep after playing video games. I found that the people who said their quality of sleep was poor and fair played video games less than one hour from falling asleep whereas the people who played video games two hours or more before they went to bed reported their sleep quality was good to very good.

——————————————————————

In conclusion, Insomnia is a disorder that can have negative effects on both the health and safety of people who have it. There are many contributing factors to insomnia like video gaming lights and extended playing times sacrificing sleep. This in my opinion is something that needs more awareness especially in our technology driven society, more and more kids are playing video games at younger ages than ever before and I believe that the insomnia linked to the gaming can have a vastly negative effect on our future. I believe that more and more people will suffer from video game induced insomnia, not because they don’t care about their health or the health of their kids/family but that they are ignorant to the potential dangers related to them playing.

Final Major Assignment #1

In writing, audience, genre, and purpose are clear components to a complete, clean, and well thought out piece of writing. I have chosen to analyze the Billy Collins, Commencement Address at Colorado College, Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail” and Gloria Anzaldua, “How to Tame a Wild Tongue”. The author’s choice of audience, genre and purpose will drive my analysis of the three readings but, before getting into the analysis, I want to discuss purpose, genre, and audience.

——————————————————————————-

The first reading I will analyze is the Billy Collins, Commencement Address at Colorado College. Blau and Burak say that purpose is what you are trying to accomplish.(Page  3) Collins’ purpose of writing to the graduates is to inspire them to slow down and live your life, do not focus too much on the future while you are living in the present. Collins says, “May you graduates waken every morning to have the supreme pleasure of being yourselves.”(Paragraph 29) Here, he is saying he hopes that the graduates won’t focus on what’s next and how they can be better, just to focus on you now and not try to rush things.

——————————————————————————-

By knowing his purpose of writing, he now knows his audience. Collins’ audience is the graduating class, their families, friends, and staff of Colorado College in 2008. “President Celeste, Distinguished Faculty, Staff, Parents, Relatives, Friends and, most importantly, the 2008 graduating class of Colorado College.”(Paragraph 1) By knowing his purpose and who his audience is, he can now know the genre of his writing. The genre is a Commencement Address. This is his genre because he states it a couple of times while speaking. “This is not the first commencement address I have ever given.”(Paragraph 3)

——————————————————————————-

Blau and Burak say that genre is what type of text you are writing (Page  3) and Martin Luther King Jr’s, “Letter from Birmingham Jail”, is inspiring and incisive. MLK is a very inspiring person and speaker. “So, we decided to go through the process of self-purification. We started having workshops on nonviolence and repeatedly asked ourselves the questions, “are you able to accept the blows without retaliating?” “Are you able to endure the ordeals of jail?””(Paragraph 6) This goes to show how inspiring MLK is. He talked to the people and he made them understand why they cannot be violent in return and cannot turn to violence when you see other people do the opposite. While being inspiring, he was also incisive, “but since I feel that you are men of genuine good will and your criticisms are sincerely set forth, I would like to answer your statement in what I hope will be patient and reasonable terms.”(Paragraph 1) MLK said this in his very first paragraph of his letter. He knew by getting right to the point it would catch your attention.

——————————————————————————-

By showing his audience he also brought out his purpose for writing. MLK’s purpose is to tell people about injustice in Birmingham, Al and to respond to the people saying his protests were violent because of the protesters. MLK says, “My friends, I must say to you that we have not made a single gain in civil rights without legal and nonviolent pressure.”(Paragraph 8) Here, he is rebutting the statement that the protesters became violent, he is saying he knows for a fact that every gain he has made was because he was legal and nonviolent. While refuting claims he also decides to make it known of the racial discrimination in Birmingham, “Then came the opportunity last September to talk with some of the leaders of the economic community. In these negotiating sessions, certain promises were made by the merchants—such as the promise to remove the humiliating racial signs from the stores.”(Paragraph 2) He continues by saying, “Its ugly record of police brutality is known in every section of the country. Its unjust treatment of Negroes in the courts is a notorious reality. There have been more unsolved bombings of Negro homes and churches in Birmingham than in any city in this nation.”(Paragraph 2) He is trying to say that what is happening in Birmingham is wrong and there needs to be made a difference so that injustice based on race will soon disappear because everyone is equal and there should not be segregated restaurants and stores. Lastly, audience. MLK’s obvious audience are the people he is writing the letter to. He addresses the letter to, “My Dear Fellow Clergymen”(Paragraph 1) but I also believe his audience was the people of Birmingham, because he talks a lot about what is going on in the city and he is sharing the stories of what he participated in. He is trying to open the eyes of the people, to show them the injustice that is going on that not everyone sees.

——————————————————————————-

Lastly, I want to analyze Gloria Anzaldua’s “How to Tame a Wild Tongue.” Blau and Burak say that the audience is for who you are writing for (Page 3). Anzaldua’s “How to Tame a Wild Tongue, focuses on the audience. Throughout the reading, I noticed two different audiences she was speaking to. As I began reading, I thought her audience was anyone who was willing to read her writing but as I continued reading, I began to discover the audience she was trying to reach ended up being fellow Mexican Americans as well as non-Mexican Americans. In “How to Tame a Wild Tongue,” Anzaldua talks about the social prejudices she struggled with growing up as a Mexican American and tries to open the readers’ eyes to what she faced along with other Chicano students.

——————————————————————————-

She explained how, “at Pan American University, I and all Chicano students were required to take two speech classes. Their purpose: to get rid of our accents.”(Page 34), where the university would try to take away the students’ accents by making them go to not one, but two speech classes in hopes that would “fix” them. Anzaldua also mentions the social insecurities people raised in the Hispanic culture had about their languages and traditions along with how they face racism in their own country. Anzaldua had a purpose behind her writing. She wanted to show the prejudices of people against Mexican Americans. She shares her memories of grade school to show us how she personally faced prejudices early on. “I remember being caught speaking Spanish at recess – that was good for three licks on the knuckles with a sharp ruler.” (Page 34) She was not allowed to speak her native language and would get in trouble for correcting her teacher on how to properly pronounce her name, “I remember being sent to the comer of the classroom for “talking back” to the Anglo teacher when all I was trying to do was tell her how to pronounce my name. “If you want to be American, speak ‘American.’ If you don’t like it, go back to Mexico where you belong.””(Page 34) This quote alone shows how ill-informed the teachers were because she was American, born in Texas, and always lived in America. They judged her based on her genetic make-up and false assumptions.

——————————————————————————-

To create a complete, clean, and well thought out piece of writing, the author must know their genre, audience, and purpose. Genre is all about reader expectations, and if a story does not meet them, it’s un-finished. Knowing and understanding your audience tells you the appropriate tone and voice for your writing and by knowing your purpose, your readers will easily understand what you are trying to communicate with them. Genre, audience, and purpose all go hand in hand. By knowing your purpose, you need to understand your audience and genre to know how to portray your message and help your readers understand what you are trying to convey. Throughout these three readings, I feel as though each other has a firm grasp on their genre, audience and purpose and they all have a complete, clean, and well thought out piece of writing.

Short Story:

Bedtime is Cancelled

By: Alyssa Sherman

An informative children’s story about how excessive video gaming can cause insomnia and how it can affect your life.

——————————–

Trent plays in a baseball league in his city and he is the co-captain. He loves baseball and hates to lose. The city championships are soon and Trent really wants to win because he got second place last year.

——————————–

For Trent’s birthday his mom bought him a brand new iPad. Since getting his iPad he would play games all day and also play without his mom knowing all night and not fall asleep until 3am. He played all night to the point bedtime was cancelled. He didn’t have bedtime anymore and went to bed whenever he wanted to.

——————————–

One night, two days before the baseball championship, his mom came into his room and found him on his iPad and took it away. She told him that too much iPad will cause you to be tired the next day. Trent was mad that he didn’t have his iPad and tried to fall asleep but he couldn’t. He stayed up until 2am. He tried counting sheep and even doing some jumping jacks to tire himself out. He would go to bed at 2 am but wake up at 7am to get ready for baseball practice at 8am.

——————————–

With only five hours of sleep, he was too tired to run as fast as he could and hit the ball as hard as he could. He didn’t know why he was so tired all the time. It was the night before the city championship and Trent was so excited. He was so excited he decided to get his iPad and look at baseball videos and practice in the backyard. At night, he snuck his iPad in his room to watch more videos. He tried to fall asleep early but because he was on his iPad all day his brain was wide awake and he couldn’t sleep. He tried counting sheep and doing some jumping jacks but nothing seemed to work.

——————————–

Eventually he fell asleep but four hours later his mom came into his bedroom to wake him up to shower and get ready for the state championship game. Trent was so tired and didn’t want to get out of bed. Once he was ready his mom brought him to his baseball game. He didn’t run as fast as he could or hit the ball as hard as he could because he was so tired. The game was all tied up and Trent was on third base. If he ran as fast as he could to homebase, he would be the final point to win the championship game. When his teammate hit the ball he started running as fast as he could but got tired very fast and slowed down half way there. Because the other team was well rested and ready to play baseball they ran faster than Trent and tagged him out.

——————————–

If Trent didn’t play on his iPad all night all summer long he would’ve been able to fall asleep the night before his big game and win the city championship game.

Subject: An update on my classes

———————————————————

Hey Mr. Smith,

I know it’s been a while since we last spoke, but I wanted to email you now because the semester is almost over, and Christmas break is right around the corner. I hope your new students aren’t causing you any grief. Sorry I haven’t been emailing you as often as I would like but I decided to go easy with my courses and it turns out there was more homework than I was expecting. I also got a new job and I mostly work in the morning so when I get home, you’re probably already home too so you wouldn’t be able to see my email. Anyways, allow me to tell you about the first semester of my first year in college. Specifically, my English class.

———————————————————

Looking back now, throughout this semester, I see that I have really changed as a writer. With the help of my professor and the instructor’s helper I feel I have grown and learned how to be a successful writer. Coming into this course I just thought it was going to be like any other English class I’ve taken before; we read a story, a speech, or a poem then discuss and write about it but what I wasn’t expecting is that we were taught not just about the material but about how to write about it too. Today I understand that there is so much more that goes into writing. Writing comes in so many different genres. For instance, this email is its own type of genre. Because I am writing to you, you might notice it is a little informal but that is only because I know my audience. For this email, you, Mr. Smith, are my audience so I don’t need to be extremely formal because you are no longer just my English teach from high school, I like to consider you a friend. If I were writing for my current teacher, I would probably compose an essay, or if I were speaking to a large group, I would write a speech. There are so many different genres for so many different audiences. You need to understand your audience to choose the right genre to get your message across as best as possible. Everything I’ve told you about so far is part of the rhetorical situation. I know you’re an English teacher and you were the first person to teach me this but just to summarize, it’s just a fancy term that means whom are you writing to and what are you trying to say.

———————————————————

In these last four months, you would be proud of what I’ve learned. One assignment that really stuck with me was the assignment where we had to write about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and when he was jailed in Birmingham, Alabama in 1963. He was arrested for participating in a non-violent protest against segregation. While in prisoned, her wrote a letter to the eight church leaders and the protesters as well as their methods. King had to consider his rhetorical situation in order to communicate with the church leaders in the best way possible. That’s why he chose to write a letter to those men he was already acquainted with and to address all of their issues one at a time. Reading and learning about this moment that made history, along with others, really opened my eyes to the importance of rhetorical situation.

———————————————————

This past semester, I had to learn how to figure out my genre based on my audience while also learning how to find out who my audience is. My third Major Assignment, I had to take a research paper that I wrote for the previous major assignment and turn it into three different genres. The only thing I found difficult during that assignment was actually doing it. One of the genres had to be an infographic but the other I could choose so I chose a short story and an informative presentation. This assignment really helped me fully understand my genre, audience, and the rhetorical situation.

———————————————————

This semester really stuck with me because I know how to find my audience in any situation; and, if I need to do a presentation at school or in front of  elderly people, I can find my audience and know what genre is perfect to effectively relay information. It’s even helped me write this email to you! It’s like a “Transfer of Learning”. I applied the information and strategies I’ve learned to email you and talk to you effectively without problems. Anyways, I hope to see you again sometime soon.

Talk soon,

Alyssa

Short Assignment #11

  • Audience— who was your intended audience for Major Assignment #3? what barriers in communicating to your audience(s) did you encounter? How did you overcome these barriers?

I had a couple intended audiences for Major Assignment 3. My first intended audience would be the people also interested in my research topic and just want to know about it. My second intended audience would be parents that are thinking about electronics for their children and want to know about all the pros and cons about letting your child have electronic at a young age, and my third intended audience are the younger generation who are learning with their parents and need to understand the risks of prolonged periods of electronic use. By using two genres who can go hand in hand, I can reach a larger audience and make more people learn while also making teachers.

  • Process—how was the composing process for your “composition in three genres” different from that for your research essay?

Making infographic was easy because I had a chance to be creative and I was talking about things I’ve stated before. Making the power point was somewhat difficult. I had to find new information so that the project is just repetitive. Finally, the short story was difficult. I found this project the most difficult because I had to use my imagination a little more than normal. I’m not that great at writing stories but I decided to take the challenge and step out of my comfort zone.

  • Genre—why did you choose the three genres that you did? How did the genre affect the audience choice?

I made an infographic, a power point, and a short story. The different genres changed the audience or each. The infographic is meant for any age, the power point is meant for an older audience because it includes data and numbers, and lastly the short story is made for a younger audience because I will use the information I’ve used before but I wrote it in a simpler word choice to help younger minds understand.

  • Purpose—what was your purpose? how did the choice of genre affect your purpose?

My purpose is to inform. All of my genres are informative and can teach many ages.

Short Assignment #10

  • You will explain which sources you are carrying over from your research essay and why they make sense for your composition project.

I am carrying over my sources from the sleep foundation. They provided a lot of information about insomnia and they also touch on the effects of blue light and how it can effect your sleep patterns. Overall, I thought keeping the sleep foundation as a source for this major assignment would be very beneficial because it is the strongest source I had in my opinion.

  • You will also report on the relevance of at least two additional sources you will use to support your project. Rather than finding additional sources about the topic itself, these sources may be about communicating your researched information to your identified audience.  For example, you may use a source that shows how to build an effective infographic or how to script and deliver a successful podcast.

I used a website to assist me on making an infographic that is effective but also interesting and will be able to catch your attention with the visuals.

I also used a website to assist me on taking information and making it simpler to understand for a younger audience.

If Trent didn’t play on his iPad all night all summer long he would’ve been able to fall asleep the night before his big game and win the city championship game.

Short Assignment #9

Part One

  • According to our textbook, what are the key elements of a profile? Please be detailed.

According to the textbook the key elements of a profile provides an in-depth look at a person or sometimes a group of people from a specific perspective or angle. It can include what might amount to a simple “driver’s license” description: height, weight, and date of birth, for example. We can also learn about the professions, passions, and lifestyles of famous, infamous, and even ordinary people, and perhaps extend the boundaries of our own lives. (Pg.125)

  • How is this Clooney profile typical of the genre profile, given the textbook’s requirements?

The Clooney profile is typical of the genre profile because it includes information you wouldn’t know just by looking at him. It talks about his age, what he looks like and where he lives. It also goes in depth about his life by saying how many houses he owns and where they are located. Along with his many riches it also talks about his early life s a child. He talks about how he used to play basketball in high school and he used to play basketball in his neighborhoods playgrounds.

  • How would you describe those readers?

I would describe the readers of esquire as men who like to be involved in the latest news and fads. “Esquire is special because it’s a magazine for men. Not a fashion magazine for men, not a health magazine for men, not a money magazine for men. It is not any of these things; it is all of them. It is, and has been for nearly seventy years, a magazine about the interests, the curiosity, the passions, of men.” (Esquire.com)

  • How well does the profiler/writer meet readers’ expectations/needs? Please quote from the Clooney profile in support.

The writer meets the needs and expectations of the reader by getting to the point with her article. She talks about his life and his achievements, she describes his home and others he owns. There is a mix of commentary and comedy like when Clooney says, “I had some turkey bacon in the refrigerator. I rubbed it on me. I’m not kidding. When she came over, the dog was all over me.” (Junod) It was a mix of informational and entertaining.

Part Two

Who is your targeted audience in Major Assignment 3?

In major assignment 3 I have two targeted audiences. My first targeted audience is teens and adults. By using my genre of a brochure I can bring my message across to teens now and ty to help them if they didn’t know about the topic earlier and hope that they will take my advice and help themselves now before they negatively effect their brains now and have to deal with it later. I also want to target the adults as well. I want them to fully understand the effect of electronics on the brain so they can reconsider giving their young children electronics and allow them to play on their devices all day long. My second targeted audience is kids under the age of 10. By using my genre of a picture book, I want to bring the message forward to younger generations now so that even if they want to listen or not to what I have to say, they will still have general knowledge of electronics and the effect they have on your brain.

How will you go about meeting the expectations of that audience?

For my brochure I am going to use colorful pictures, graphs and add information besides each to relay my research and inform them on my topic. For the second genre I will also be using colorful pictures and easy to read information. I want to actually try to write a story but if I can’t I’m going to try to make an informational power point for children.
