Short Story:

Bedtime is Cancelled

By: Alyssa Sherman

An informative children’s story about how excessive video gaming can cause insomnia and how it can affect your life.

Trent plays in a baseball league in his city and he is the co-captain. He loves baseball and hates to lose. The city championships are soon and Trent really wants to win because he got second place last year.

For Trent’s birthday his mom bought him a brand new iPad. Since getting his iPad he would play games all day and also play without his mom knowing all night and not fall asleep until 3am. He played all night to the point bedtime was cancelled. He didn’t have bedtime anymore and went to bed whenever he wanted to.

One night, two days before the baseball championship, his mom came into his room and found him on his iPad and took it away. She told him that too much iPad will cause you to be tired the next day. Trent was mad that he didn’t have his iPad and tried to fall asleep but he couldn’t. He stayed up until 2am. He tried counting sheep and even doing some jumping jacks to tire himself out. He would go to bed at 2 am but wake up at 7am to get ready for baseball practice at 8am.

With only five hours of sleep, he was too tired to run as fast as he could and hit the ball as hard as he could. He didn’t know why he was so tired all the time. It was the night before the city championship and Trent was so excited. He was so excited he decided to get his iPad and look at baseball videos and practice in the backyard. At night, he snuck his iPad in his room to watch more videos. He tried to fall asleep early but because he was on his iPad all day his brain was wide awake and he couldn’t sleep. He tried counting sheep and doing some jumping jacks but nothing seemed to work.

Eventually he fell asleep but four hours later his mom came into his bedroom to wake him up to shower and get ready for the state championship game. Trent was so tired and didn’t want to get out of bed. Once he was ready his mom brought him to his baseball game. He didn’t run as fast as he could or hit the ball as hard as he could because he was so tired. The game was all tied up and Trent was on third base. If he ran as fast as he could to homebase, he would be the final point to win the championship game. When his teammate hit the ball he started running as fast as he could but got tired very fast and slowed down half way there. Because the other team was well rested and ready to play baseball they ran faster than Trent and tagged him out.

If Trent didn’t play on his iPad all night all summer long he would’ve been able to fall asleep the night before his big game and win the city championship game.

Short Assignment #11

  • Audience— who was your intended audience for Major Assignment #3? what barriers in communicating to your audience(s) did you encounter? How did you overcome these barriers?

I had a couple intended audiences for Major Assignment 3. My first intended audience would be the people also interested in my research topic and just want to know about it. My second intended audience would be parents that are thinking about electronics for their children and want to know about all the pros and cons about letting your child have electronic at a young age, and my third intended audience are the younger generation who are learning with their parents and need to understand the risks of prolonged periods of electronic use. By using two genres who can go hand in hand, I can reach a larger audience and make more people learn while also making teachers.

  • Process—how was the composing process for your “composition in three genres” different from that for your research essay?

Making infographic was easy because I had a chance to be creative and I was talking about things I’ve stated before. Making the power point was somewhat difficult. I had to find new information so that the project is just repetitive. Finally, the short story was difficult. I found this project the most difficult because I had to use my imagination a little more than normal. I’m not that great at writing stories but I decided to take the challenge and step out of my comfort zone.

  • Genre—why did you choose the three genres that you did? How did the genre affect the audience choice?

I made an infographic, a power point, and a short story. The different genres changed the audience or each. The infographic is meant for any age, the power point is meant for an older audience because it includes data and numbers, and lastly the short story is made for a younger audience because I will use the information I’ve used before but I wrote it in a simpler word choice to help younger minds understand.

  • Purpose—what was your purpose? how did the choice of genre affect your purpose?

My purpose is to inform. All of my genres are informative and can teach many ages.

Short Assignment #10

  • You will explain which sources you are carrying over from your research essay and why they make sense for your composition project.

I am carrying over my sources from the sleep foundation. They provided a lot of information about insomnia and they also touch on the effects of blue light and how it can effect your sleep patterns. Overall, I thought keeping the sleep foundation as a source for this major assignment would be very beneficial because it is the strongest source I had in my opinion.

  • You will also report on the relevance of at least two additional sources you will use to support your project. Rather than finding additional sources about the topic itself, these sources may be about communicating your researched information to your identified audience.  For example, you may use a source that shows how to build an effective infographic or how to script and deliver a successful podcast.

I used a website to assist me on making an infographic that is effective but also interesting and will be able to catch your attention with the visuals.

I also used a website to assist me on taking information and making it simpler to understand for a younger audience.

Short Assignment #9

Part One

  • According to our textbook, what are the key elements of a profile? Please be detailed.

According to the textbook the key elements of a profile provides an in-depth look at a person or sometimes a group of people from a specific perspective or angle. It can include what might amount to a simple “driver’s license” description: height, weight, and date of birth, for example. We can also learn about the professions, passions, and lifestyles of famous, infamous, and even ordinary people, and perhaps extend the boundaries of our own lives. (Pg.125)

  • How is this Clooney profile typical of the genre profile, given the textbook’s requirements?

The Clooney profile is typical of the genre profile because it includes information you wouldn’t know just by looking at him. It talks about his age, what he looks like and where he lives. It also goes in depth about his life by saying how many houses he owns and where they are located. Along with his many riches it also talks about his early life s a child. He talks about how he used to play basketball in high school and he used to play basketball in his neighborhoods playgrounds.

  • How would you describe those readers?

I would describe the readers of esquire as men who like to be involved in the latest news and fads. “Esquire is special because it’s a magazine for men. Not a fashion magazine for men, not a health magazine for men, not a money magazine for men. It is not any of these things; it is all of them. It is, and has been for nearly seventy years, a magazine about the interests, the curiosity, the passions, of men.” (Esquire.com)

  • How well does the profiler/writer meet readers’ expectations/needs? Please quote from the Clooney profile in support.

The writer meets the needs and expectations of the reader by getting to the point with her article. She talks about his life and his achievements, she describes his home and others he owns. There is a mix of commentary and comedy like when Clooney says, “I had some turkey bacon in the refrigerator. I rubbed it on me. I’m not kidding. When she came over, the dog was all over me.” (Junod) It was a mix of informational and entertaining.

Part Two

Who is your targeted audience in Major Assignment 3?

In major assignment 3 I have two targeted audiences. My first targeted audience is teens and adults. By using my genre of a brochure I can bring my message across to teens now and ty to help them if they didn’t know about the topic earlier and hope that they will take my advice and help themselves now before they negatively effect their brains now and have to deal with it later. I also want to target the adults as well. I want them to fully understand the effect of electronics on the brain so they can reconsider giving their young children electronics and allow them to play on their devices all day long. My second targeted audience is kids under the age of 10. By using my genre of a picture book, I want to bring the message forward to younger generations now so that even if they want to listen or not to what I have to say, they will still have general knowledge of electronics and the effect they have on your brain.

How will you go about meeting the expectations of that audience?

For my brochure I am going to use colorful pictures, graphs and add information besides each to relay my research and inform them on my topic. For the second genre I will also be using colorful pictures and easy to read information. I want to actually try to write a story but if I can’t I’m going to try to make an informational power point for children.

Short Assignment #8

Sample

Part One

What are the characteristics of the obituary as a genre?

An obituary is to inform loved ones, friends and families about someones passing. An obituary normally includes the person’s name, birth place, age, date of death, location and the option to include cause of death. It also can include the persons life achievements and family members that they are survived by.

How well does the Jackson obituary meet those characteristics?

The Jackson obituary met multiple characteristics. The started by saying has name, age and location of his death, “…was pronounced dead on Thursday afternoon at U.C.L.A. Medical Center after arriving in a coma, a city official said. Mr. Jackson was 50…” The obituary also included many achievements of Jackson, “…he has sold more than 750 million albums.” They also spoke about his achievements as a child in the music industry, “From his days as the youngest brother in the Jackson 5 to his solo career in the 1980s and early 1990s, Mr. Jackson was responsible for a string of hits like “I Want You Back,” “I’ll Be There”…” Lastly, the obituary included who is surviving him, “They all survive him, as do his parents, Joseph and Katherine Jackson, of Las Vegas, and three children: Michael Joseph Jackson Jr., Paris Michael Katherine Jackson, born to Mr. Jackson’s second wife, Deborah Jeanne Rowe, and Prince Michael Jackson II, the son of a surrogate mother.”

Do you detect any bias?  If so, what kind?  Where?

I detected a little bias because when writing an obituary you tend to focus on everything good that happened in the persons life but in Michael Jackson’s obituary, thy wrote about the scandals he faced throughout his life. They wrote, “His darkest moment undoubtedly came in 2003, when he was indicted on child molesting charges. A young cancer patient claimed the singer had befriended him and then groped him at his Neverland estate near Santa Barbara, Calif., but Mr. Jackson was acquitted on all charges.” Later in the obituary they bring up the accusations again saying, “The case ultimately turned on the credibility of Mr. Jackson’s accuser, a 15-year-old cancer survivor who said the defendant had gotten him drunk and molested him several times.”

Who is the intended audience of the Jackson obituary? How do you know? Again, please quote from the source.

I believe the intended audience are the people who are more interested in drama and gossip than the persons achievements, life and family. The majority of this article is written about scandals he’s been in, and the amount of debt he was acing while still alive. “The case ultimately turned on the credibility of Mr. Jackson’s accuser, a 15-year-old cancer survivor who said the defendant had gotten him drunk and molested him several times.” they continued by saying, “By at least the late 1990s, he began to take out huge loans to support himself and pay debts. In 1998, he took out a loan for $140 million from Bank of America, which two years later was increased to $200 million. Further loans of hundreds of millions followed.”

Part Two

My research question is about “The Symptoms of Insomnia in Adult Gamers”

For my first genre I want to make a drawing based on my research so it can be understood easily. I want to do this because my research is very cause and effect so with diagrams I can show the multiple causes and their individual effects of the adult gamers. Diagrams could be confusing to some but others who understand better visually rather than reading facts on a page can benefit from this genre choice.

For my second genre, I want to make an informative yet informal children’s book style power point. I want to do this genre because I believe if I can make an easy to read style children’s book, I can reach out to children now to try to talk to them about why you should not be playing video games and watching your electronics all day long.

Major Assignment #2, Draft #2

Alyssa Sherman

Howard Tinberg

ENG-101-A08

Throughout this essay I will discuss the correlation between video game usage and the symptoms of insomnia in adult gamers. Insomnia is a sleep disorder that affects as many as 35% of adults. It can have serious effects, leading to excessive daytime sleepiness, a higher risk of auto accidents, and widespread health effects from sleep deprivation. (Suni, 2020) This is a serious disorder that if not treated properly can have devastating health and safety consequences, “For example, more than 50% of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease complain of difficulties initiating or maintaining sleep, and 50% of adults with diabetes are reported to have insomnia. Shorter sleep time is associated with impaired glucose regulation and with increased risk of diabetes.” (Mark R. Rosekind, 2010)

There are many factors that can contribute to insomnia. The increase in technology and increased use of video games is one of these contributing factors, “An increased amount of screen time throughout the day has been linked to insomnia and symptoms of depression in adolescents.” (Foundation) The light that is emitted from electronic gaming devices can have a drastic effect on sleep and it is named The Blue Light Effect, “Electronic devices emit an artificial blue light that can suppress the release of the body’s sleep-inducing hormone, melatonin. In turn, this can interfere with the body’s natural internal clock that signals when it’s time to sleep and wake up.” (Foundation) Another factor is that people delay sleep to play video games, “Results show that on average, gamers delayed going to bed 36 percent of the nights they played video games. Average game playing was 4.6 nights per week. The average delay in bedtime on the nights spent gaming was 101 minutes…our data shows that video gaming is quite an important factor that frequently leads to missed sleep for 67 percent of gamers.” (Daily, 2016)

Today’s society relies heavily on electronic forms of entertainment, especially during the COVID lockdowns. “According to Verizon, U.S. video game usage during peak hours has gone up 75 percent since the quarantine first went into effect last week. Meanwhile, video streaming has also increased by 12 percent.” (Shanley, 2020) I found this topic to be both interesting and informative, due to the increase in gaming especially during the quarantine. I came across a study done within a few countries on the continent of Africa, “Data was collected in South Arica, Cameroon, Morocco, Rwanda, Tunisia, Gabon, Nigeria, Ivory Coast and Senegal…The effect of continuous gaming time (after 1, 6 and 12 months) on severity of sleep disorders and the distribution of gamers per country and per type of device were also calculated.” I found that the duration of time had led to an increase of symptoms of insomnia, “After 1 month, participants has no clinical insomnia, but after 6 months they developed subthreshold insomnia and clinical moderate insomnia.” The participants began to show symptoms of insomnia after six months which is why I believe the duration brings on the symptoms of insomnia. The study also included that the participants who experienced the first symptoms where people who are considered problematic gamers and spend a longer amount of time playing. “In the same population, a small proportion of respondents reported experiencing insomnia and sleepiness simultaneously (n=850, 8.04% of the sample). Based on a retrospective account of participants, problematic gamers experienced the first symptoms of sleep disorders after ten months of intensive gaming, with an average of 16 hours of gaming per week.” (Faustin Armel Etindele Sosso, 2018)

Along with the research I found, I conducted my own research by surveying a random sample of adult gamers ages ranging from 18-21 years old. Out of the seven responses, I found that the gamers that said they play games farther from bed time fall asleep in less than 10 minutes but as the time rang closer to the time they laid down for bed it was said they had a longer time falling asleep ranging from 30 minutes to an hour after laying down. I also asked them about their quality of sleep after playing video games. I found that the people who said their quality of sleep was poor and fair played video games less than one hour from falling asleep whereas the people who played video games two hours or more before they went to bed reported their sleep quality was good to very good.

In conclusion, Insomnia is a disorder that can have negative effects on both the health and safety of people who have it. There are many contributing factors to insomnia like video gaming lights and extended playing times sacrificing sleep. This in my opinion is something that needs more awareness especially in our technology driven society, more and more kids are playing video games at younger ages than ever before and I believe that the insomnia linked to the gaming can have a vastly negative effect on our future. I believe that more and more people will suffer from video game induced insomnia, not because they don’t care about their health or the health of their kids/family but that they are ignorant to the potential dangers related to them playing.
